Common questions

How does Banlist block someone?

Banlist adds a checkout rule to your store. When a buyer enters their details at checkout, the rule compares them with your blocklist. If they match someone on it, they see your message and can't complete the order. It works for every payment method, including Shop Pay, express checkouts and cash on delivery.

What does it match?

Email, phone, name, shipping and billing address, and the customer's account. Small changes still match: capital letters, +aliases and dots in Gmail addresses, phone numbers with or without the country code, names in either order, and addresses written with abbreviations or a different unit format.

Will a blocked buyer know why?

They see the message you choose in Settings. Banlist never tells them which detail matched, so they can't work out what to change.

How do I check it works?

Use Test a buyer in the app: type in details and see whether they'd be blocked and why. You can also turn on test mode in Settings, which logs attempts without blocking anyone.

Can I block someone from an order?

Yes. On an order or customer page in Shopify, open More actions and choose Block with Banlist. Their email, phone, names and addresses are filled in for you to confirm.

Does it slow down checkout?

No. The check runs on Shopify's own servers as part of checkout, in a few milliseconds.

What happens when I uninstall?

The checkout rule is removed with the app, so nobody is blocked any more. Your list is deleted 48 hours later. Export it first if you may come back.
